Ferrari celebrates

By Graham Duxbury @TheRealDux

This coming weekend, the celebration of Ferrari’s 1000th Formula One race is sure to be muted. This will not only be due to the lack of fans at the Tuscan Grand Prix at the Mugello circuit in Italy – although 2880 will be allowed in on race day – but surely because Ferrari’s performance, baring a miracle, will most likely be less than stellar given the team’s current form.

While there might not be too much for the tifosi to cheer for on Sunday, perhaps the Ferrari faithful should remember happier times when the Scuderia was at its best and the cars bearing the famous Prancing Horse emblem ruled the F1 world.

For example, between 1975 and 1979 Ferrari’s fabulous 312T won 27 races, four World Constructor’s Championship and three Drivers’ Championships. It is undoubtedly one of the most successful Ferraris.

The 312T, powered by Ferrari’s famous three-litre flat-12-cylinder engine characterised by its smooth power delivery, was able to complement the smooth and clinical driving techniques of its drivers,

Apart from helping the legendary Niki Lauda win two championships in 1976 and 1977, the 312T was also raced by Clay Regazzoni, Gilles Villeneuve and our own Jody Schecker, who won his title in ’79.

The Ferrari 312T car was built by renowned designer Mauro Forghieri who is credited with fitting the first rear wing to a F1 car and conceptualising the first transverse gearbox (which the “T” in 312T represents). The five-speed unit helped improve handling by centralising the car’s weight or, in more technical terms, reducing its polar moment of inertia.

In addition to Lauda and Scheckter, Forghieri’s leadership helped Ferrari win the world championship in 1964 for John Surtees – still the only man to win world titles on two wheels and four.
