Hulkenberg side-lined for 2020?

By Graham Duxbury @TheRealDux

##nothumbs##

With Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Alfa Romeo having finalised their driver line-ups for 2020, it appears as if Nico Hulkenberg – “The Hulk” to his many fans - will be on F1’s side-lines next year.  He will be replaced at the Renault team by Esteban Ocon.

Hulkenberg is a previous champion in a number of competitive single-seater formulae – F3 Euro Series, A1 Grand Prix and GP2 – and is also a Le Mans 24-hour race winner.

His career showed early promise. He won F1's feeder series, the GP2 (now Formula 2) Championship on debut joining the select club of Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Charles Leclerc and George Russel as drivers who have achieved this feat.

However, Hulkenberg also holds the unfortunate record for the most F1 race starts without a podium finish

Hulkenberg made his first F1 appearance in 2010 with the Williams team. Despite claiming the first pole position for Williams in more than five years, he was not retained for the following year. In 2011 he joined Force India (now Racing Point) as a test and reserve driver. He was promoted to a race seat with the team for the 2012 season. In 2013 he joined the Sauber team (now Alfa Romeo Sauber). He returned to Force India in 2014 and made the switch to Renault last year.

Rumour has it Hulkenberg will move to IndyCar racing in 2020, maybe competing against Fernando Alonso in the Indy 500?
